Nationally 1,200 children under the age of 11 are injured and 35 killed in fires in the home in the UK every year. 6,000 fires a year are caused by children under 10 years old (source CLG).
You can help to stop it happening to the children in your care. We need your help to deliver effective safety education to the children and young people of Dorset and will happily arrange a visit by or to DFRS to help pass on the important safety messages.
We are keen to fully support children and young people with their safety education. We have five safety aims which we cover in our education from birth to 18 years:
- Fire prevention in the home
- Smoke alarms and escape plans
- Calling 999
- Not playing with fire
- Road safety
As the children progress the complexity of our messages develop and although the same subject matter is discussed a visit to SafeWise is delivered differently from a visit to your school by DFRS. We encourage you to contact us to discuss which options are best for you. We also understand that you will have your own learning outcomes. Our visits can be adapted to cover any subjects you wish, provided we are able to deliver our safety messages. Please indicate on your booking form any topics you are focusing on.
In order to do this we have created safety education resources and sessions to be delivered to all ages, abilities and circumstances. All resources and sessions have been developed by a qualified teacher with the advice and approval of local Dorset teachers. All sessions will be delivered by trained and experienced Dorset Fire & Rescue Service staff. Sessions will be tailor made and adapted to your requirements. We also have an extensive collection of activities for you to deliver to your children (schools Reception to Key Stage 3).We offer a wide variety of different sessions to choose from depending on your requirements are happy to deliver safety education to all children and young people of Dorset in all education settings:
