Her Majesty's Fire Service Inspectorate, by the process of inspection and the provision of independant professional advice, will inform Ministers on the way in which fire authorities are performing their functions under the Fire Services Act, other legislation, and on technical matters related to those functions. Therefore the inspection process seeks to ensure brigades maintain their statutory obligations and achieve Best Value in service delivery in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 1999.
Government policies inevitably effect the work of the Inspectorate and the Government's wish to modernise local government is particularly relevant. Fire Authorities, as part of the local government infrastructure, are expected to respond to the process of modernisation which involve changes in the way local authorities are financed and managed.
